On this historic day- June 16- BotswanaPost is proud to celebrate the power of youth expression by announcing the winners of the 54th Universal Postal Union (UPU) Letter Writing Competition through the Kwala Tempa Posa initiative. Today’s announcement is a tribute to the enduring importance of young voices in shaping a better future, echoing the spirit of courage, literacy, and advocacy that June 16 represents across Southern Africa.

As BotswanaPost celebrates 150 years of service, this moment speaks to more than our longevity as a postal operator. It reflects our enduring commitment to literacy, youth empowerment, and national storytelling.

The tradition of letter writing is more than ink on paper- it is the preservation of thought, emotion, and history. It connects generations, records our dreams, and allows young people to take their place in the national and global narrative. In honoring today’s winners, we are safeguarding a practice that gives voice to the voiceless, and preparing a future where today’s young writers become tomorrow’s leaders, thinkers, and change makers.

Held annually, this global competition provides a powerful platform for children to express themselves through the written word. This year, BotswanaPost successfully facilitated the competition nationally, receiving an outstanding 303 entries from learners aged 9 to 15-reflecting a 252% increase in participation and the growing impact of the Kwala Tempa Posa movement in revitalizing letter writing among young people.

The theme for the 54th Edition of the Universal Postal Union International Letter Writing Competition, “Imagine you are the ocean. Write a letter to someone explaining why and how they should take good care of you,” encouraged participants to reflect deeply on environmental stewardship, empathy, and the power of personal expression.

National entries were reviewed by a panel of professional educators and a chief marker, with oversight provided by our marking partner, The Broadcasters Organization (TBO), ensuring credibility and fairness in the evaluation process.

We are pleased to announce the top three national winners:

1st Place: Nelly Digwaamaje from Chichi Hill Community Junior Secondary School, Molapowabojwang.

The winning letter has been submitted to the Universal Postal Union to compete with other letters from different countries on global stage.

2nd Place: Annah Rose Bagopi from Mogokotswane Primary School.

3rd Place: Osego Ednah Maswe from Mariba Junior Secondary School.

All winners will receive their exciting prizes during the World Post Day celebrations on 10th October 2025.

In continued effort to encourage literacy and participation, BotswanaPost and The Broadcasters Organization introduced a Top 10 Recognition Category. These students and schools will receive certificates of appreciation for their outstanding letters.
