INTERNATIONAL LETTER WRITING COMPETITION

JOIN THE 52ND INTERNATIONAL LETTER WRITING COMPETITION

It’s time to show off those writing skills and claim your position as the next 2023 UPU writing champion!

Botswana, as a member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), is participating in the UPU International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People 2023 to source the best writing champion in Botswana who will compete internationally. Yes, we are looking for you!

Young people all over the world are invited to write a letter under the theme "Imagine you are a superhero and your mission is to make all roads around the world safer for children. Write a letter to someone explaining which superpowers you would need to achieve your mission". The competition is done in partnership with the UN Road Safety Fund (UNRSF) against the backdrop of recognizing safety as a critical component of its mission and in support of the UN Second Decade of Action for Road Safety.

The competition is open to students from 9 years up to the age of 15 years. Submission of letters will be done locally where three (3) winning letters will go on to compete globally with other young people participating in the competition. BotswanaPost recognizes the importance of nurturing young talent by way of investing in their learning and thus encourages all learners within the stipulated age bracket to participate

The competition is an excellent way for young people to develop their writing skills as well as to express their thoughts clearly and foster enjoyment of letter writing.  Letter writing creates awareness among young people on the important role of the postal sector in economies as well as strengthens international relations.

BotswanaPost will award prizes to the schools and students producing the top three (3) letters at national level during World Post Day celebrations to be held in October 2023. The best letter at national level will be submitted to the UPU to compete with other letters from the UPU member countries the world over.

Previously Botswana has exceled in the competition, in 2011 Botswana was awarded position 3 in the world through Charlene Tlagae’s letter, then a Form 2 student at Crescent English Medium School in Lobatse; while the 2017 competition was won by 13 year-old Gracious Orefile Mogomotsi from Serameng Primary School in Mogoditshane at national level.
