In celebration of 150 years of service, BotswanaPost is excited to participate in the 54th UPU International Letter Writing Competition through the Kwala Tempa Posa initiative with exciting prizes for national winners.
From humble beginnings with traditional mail and mail runners to evolving into a dynamic postal operator offering innovative digital products like DigiPost, Virtual Post Boxes, Virtual Teller Machines, and Posa’it, BotswanaPost has consistently delivered more than just mail—it has delivered innovation, convenience, and connection. Despite advancements with digital products, BotswanaPost remains committed to preserving the timeless tradition of written communication through initiatives such as Kwala Tempa Posa.
As a proud member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU)—which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2024—BotswanaPost is part of a global network that unites 192 postal systems reinforcing its commitment to continue providing reliable, inclusive, and forward-thinking postal services.
To mark this commitment, BotswanaPost invites young writers through their respective schools to participate in the 54th UPU International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People at national level.
The letter writing competition is open to students aged 9-15 years under the theme ‘Imagine you are the ocean. Write a letter to someone explaining why and how they should take good care of you.’
This year’s theme encourages children to reflect on their role in building a sustainable future, raising awareness of marine conservation and the interconnectedness of ecosystems worldwide.
The competition highlights the UPU’s mission to promote literacy and communication through letters, while aligning with the commitment of the IMO (International Maritime Organization) and UNESCO to address the urgent need to safeguard marine ecosystems. This year’s theme invites young participants to give voice to the ocean, exploring its beauty, the challenges it faces and our collective responsibility for preserving it.
Although Botswana is a landlocked country, local young writers will have a unique opportunity to contribute to global conversations about ocean conservation through the 54th International Letter Writing Competition, organized by the Universal Postal Union (UPU).
To support learners in crafting their letters, BotswanaPost is encouraging teachers and parents to play an active role in guiding students. By connecting local ecosystems—such as Botswana’s rivers and wetlands, including the Okavango Delta—to the broader global ocean, educators can help young participants develop meaningful and creative ideas on ocean conservation.
Submission of letters will be done locally where three (3) winning letters will be chosen. BotswanaPost will award prizes to the schools and students producing the top three (3) letters at national level during World Post Day celebrations to be held in October 2025. The best letter at national level each year is submitted to the UPU to compete with other letters from the UPU member countries the world over. The winning letter for last year from Botswana was from Onkarabile Amantle Letso Moome of Maikano CJSS. Our winner celebrated another success this year, Onkarabile obtained a Merit 7 A’s and 2 B’s for her JC, being top of her school.
Despite Botswana not being among the international winners last year, Charlene Tlagae, then a Form 2 student at Crescent English Medium School in 2011 scooped 3rd position at international level.
“BotswanaPost’s Kwala Tempa Posa initiative recognizes the importance of nurturing young talent and igniting the habit of writing letters, as a way to also introduce them to this long standing tradition and way of communications, whilst they imagine, reflect, and take action for a sustainable future.” Tebogo Lebotse Sebego – Chief Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Officer.
