Vital Information

When you apply for coverage under the Motshidisi Funeral Plan, we need to secure the following vital information from you.

  • A valid National Identity (Omang) for citizens or certified passport copy for non-citizens, including work and/or residence permits. Please note: your full name and as it appears on these documents must match your application.
  • Qualification criteria for Motshidisi Funeral Plan is age-based. This means it is important for us to verify your date of birth to ensure that you fall within the stipulated 65-84 age range.
  • Hollard will be sending you important information about your policy via SMS. With this in mind, we will need your active mobile number. If you do not own a mobile device, a relative or guardian’s number will be required.
  • You must also nominate a beneficiary, preferably a family member, as the individual who will receive your payout on your behalf in the event of your death.

How long is the waiting period?

  • There is no waiting period for accidental deaths.
  • In the event of death by natural causes, there is a 12-month waiting period.
  • The same 12-month waiting period applies to deaths by suicide.

If you have a pre-existing condition which is life threatening, we regret to inform you that we are unable to cover you under Motshidisi Funeral Plan.

What happens if I skip some of my premium payments?

It is most important for you to pay your premiums when they are due. If you forget, or if you are having financial challenges, it is important for you to catch up the payments you have missed so that your premiums do not remain in arrears.

If you miss more than three payments in a row or in a staggered manner, the policy will be canceled and your cover will fall away. If you were to die at this time, Hollard would not be able to make any payouts.

How is a claim processed?

We need certain documents to fast-track the payment of a claim.

  • Notification of the bereavement to Hollard
  • Claim form, duly completed
  • Certified copy of Death Certificate
  • Proof of relationship of beneficiary to the deceased
  • Certified ID of beneficiary
  • Proof of beneficiary’s banking details.

How are claims paid?

Claims are paid into the Botswana bank account of your nominated beneficiary, or by cheque in their name.

How long does it take for claims to be paid?

Once Hollard receives all the claim documents in good order, the claim benefits are paid out within 48 hours.

Can any of my dependents be included?

This is a Member-only policy. If you would like to cover multiple members of your family, you must purchase separate policies and maintain them.

Can a person be covered on more than one Motshidisi Funeral Plan?
Yes, you may purchase multiple policies provided you can afford the premiums. Hollard pays out a maximum of P30 000 per life.

Who are benefits payable to in the event of death?

Benefits are payable to your nominated beneficiary. In the absence of a nominated beneficiary, Hollard adopts the following order of payment for claims:

  • Partner/ Spouse of the deceased

In the absence of a Partner

  • Adult Child (above the age of 18) of the deceased. In the event that that the child is a minor, claims proceeds may be paid to legal guardian and proof of guardianship may be requested.

In the event that there is no child

  • Parent of the deceased

If there are no parents

  • Claims proceeds will be paid into the estate of the deceased through the Botswana High Court

This is why it is so important for you to nominate your preferred beneficiary upon policy registration to ensure that claims are processed quickly.

Can a policy be restarted after it has lapsed?

Hollard allows you to restart your policy after it has lapsed. You need to notify Hollard or BotswanaPost of your intention to restart the policy and recommence your premium payments.

It is important for you to note that you do not need to clear any arrear premiums for the months within which the policy was in lapse state.

For example, if your policy lapsed in February, and you restart in July, you do not need to pay the arrears for the 5 months. Simply focus on maintaining your premium payments for July going forward.

How many times is one allowed to restart a policy?

Hollard allows a client to restart your policy three times. However, your benefits will fall away if you go beyond this. That’s why it is so important to maintain your premium payments.

Can a claim be rejected — and why?

The policy has certain exclusions which may result in claims being rejected under the following circumstances:

When you leave Botswana for more than 3 months. If you wish to travel outside Botswana for up to 90 days, you need to notify Hollard, then the underwriters will assess if cover will be provided during your time away.

  • Your premiums were in arrears hence policy was in lapsed state

  • If you were not eligible for cover in line with the terms and conditions of the policy
