Hippo Stamp Release

BotswanaPost, as the designated Postal Operator of Botswana, continues its rich tradition of issuing captivating stamps through its Philatelic Unit. Every five years, a definitive set is released, showcasing themes of international interest, while commemorative sets, reflecting Botswana's environment, culture, and historical heritage, are issued 4 or 5 times annually.

On the 23rd of November 2023, BotswanaPost released its second Commemorative Stamp Issue of the year – Hippopotamus in Botswana. This release not only marks a celebration of Botswana's diverse and thriving wildlife but also emphasizes the nation's commitment to environmental conservation.

Botswana, renowned for its ecological tapestry, is home to one of the largest hippopotamus populations in Africa. The Chobe River and the Okavango Delta, iconic natural wonders, play host to a substantial number of these magnificent creatures. The release aims to spotlight the beauty and importance of hippos in Botswana's natural heritage.

Through this stamp issue, BotswanaPost not only showcases the country's dedication to environmental conservation but also advocates for the protection and preservation of habitats crucial for these remarkable animals.

Collaborating with entities such as The Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, Department of Wildlife and National Parks, Mmokolodi Game Reserve, Desert & Delta Safaris, and photographers Stephen Stockhal and Oteng Solomon, this stamp issue reflects the collective effort of a dedicated team.

Itumeleng Motswetla, a talented Motswana artist (Art by Itumeleng M), and graphic designer Petrus Des Kuhlmann played pivotal roles in bringing this stamp to life. The Stamp Advisory Committee, responsible for advising on philatelic matters and stamp themes, played a crucial role in the stamp's conceptualization.

The stamp issue offers four denominations – P8, P10, and P20, with a Souvenir sheet and a First Day Cover also available. These can be obtained at all Post Offices in Botswana or through the official BotswanaPost Philately website

BotswanaPost hopes that this Hippopotamus Commemorative Stamp Issue will not only become a collector's item but also serve as a lasting reminder of Botswana's unwavering commitment to biodiversity conservation and the extraordinary beauty the country holds.
