Botswana, as a member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), invites you to participate in the UPU International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People.
On its 53rd year running the letter writing completion is open to young people all over the world, and this year, they are invited to write a letter under the theme "At 150 years old, the UPU has served people around the world for more than eight generations. The world has changed enormously since then. Write a letter to future generations about the world you hope they inherit".
The UPU is organising the competition in partnership with UNICEF to empower children and youth worldwide by encouraging literacy and creativity through the art of letter writing. The chosen theme encourages young people to articulate their thoughts on current global challenges and propose innovative solutions.
The competition is open to students from 9 years up to the age of 15 years. Submission of letters will be done locally where three (3) winning letters will be chosen. BotswanaPost will award prizes to the schools and students producing the top three (3) letters at national level during World Post Day celebrations to be held in October 2024. The winning letter for last year from Botswana was from Anita Makale of Kgaphamadi Primary School in Ghanzi.
The best letter at national level each year is submitted to the UPU to compete with other letters from the UPU member countries the world over. As Botswana our best outcome from the UPU letter writing completion was in 2011 when we were placed in position 3 worldwide, for a letter from Charlene Tlagae, then a Form 2 student at Crescent English Medium School in Lobatse.
“BotswanaPost recognizes the importance of nurturing young talent and igniting the habit of writing letters, as a way to also introduce them to this long standing tradition and way of communications, whilst at the same time, familiarizing them with the world of stamps and stamps collection” Tebogo Lebotse Sebego – Chief Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Officer.
