Sekoma Mall
Minister officially opening the mall

Friday 9 October 2026, was a special day for Sekoma. As Botswana marked World Post Day under the theme ‘One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities’, BotswanaPost officially opened Sekoma Poso Mall located along the Trans-Kalahari Highway. The Minister of Communications and Innovation, Honourable David Tshere, officiated at the national commemoration, which brought together Government representatives, industry stakeholders, partners and the Sekoma community.

World Post Day is observed every 9 October to mark the founding of the Universal Postal Union in 1874. This year’s theme highlighted the role of postal networks beyond mail delivery, including financial inclusion, digital access, commerce and essential services.

Services Closer to Home

For the people of Sekoma, Khonkhwa and Keng, with a combined population of about 3,220, essential postal, financial and digital services are now much closer to home. The Ikageng Programme beneficiaries from Khonkhwa and Keng, who previously travelled to Mabutsane for their monthly allowances, can now collect them in Sekoma. The Old Age Pension (OAP) beneficiaries will also receive their monthly payments directly at Sekoma Post Office, saving time and travel costs.

Opportunities for Local Business

Space in the mall has been set aside for Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) to trade, alongside a tailor-made agribusiness service offering that recognises the farming potential of the area.

Built through Partnership

The development has a total contract sum of about P5.3 million. The Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA) committed P2.6 million through the Universal Access and Service Fund, and BotswanaPost contributed P2.74 million.

BotswanaPost Board Chairperson, Ms. Katlego Arnone, stated, “Sekoma Post Office demonstrates how one postal network can connect communities, support businesses, facilitate access to essential services and create opportunities for local economic participation.”

She added, “BotswanaPost recognizes that transformation requires institutions to execute, innovate and create measurable value from the resources and infrastructure entrusted to them.”

Honorourable David Tshere, Minister of Communications & Innovation highlighted that the phrase ‘Infinite Possibilities’ challenges us to look beyond what the postal network has traditionally been and to consider what it can become. Further mentioning that “As we say in Setswana pula e na e sa tlhaole. In the same spirit, the benefits of technological advancement, connectivity and economic opportunity should reach all communities across our country. The postal network has an important role to play in achieving this objective”.

Celebrating Young Talent

The commemoration was preceded by youth-focused activities, including an Intra-School Debate and a Art & Design Competition on 7 October. On the day, awards were presented to the winners of the debate, the stamp design competition and the 2026 UPU International Letter Writing Competition.

The 2026 UPU International Letter Writing Competition winners are as follows;

  • First place: Tlotso Moduke, Kgaphamadi Primary School, won a laptop.
  • Second place: Losika Lame Gaboratwe, Gantsi Primary School, won a tablet.
  • Third place: Katlego Rakwena, Mookami Junior Secondary School, won a smart phone.

Part of a Growing Network

Sekoma forms part of a wider network expansion. Grootlaagte Post Office began operations this year with P1 million in support from BOCRA, and other recent developments include Maokane, Dukwi, Sebina, Salajwe and Tati Siding.

We invite residents to use the available postal services and support the businesses at the mall.
